| A total of 15 events and 340 quota spots have been awarded to showcase our sport in the best possible way.
The International Shooting Sport Federation is delighted to announce the 15 events that have been confirmed for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, following a decision of the International Olympic Committee.
It is significant that all proposed changes to events made by the ISSF, under the strong leadership of President Luciano Rossi and Secretary General Alessandro Nicotra Di San Giacomo were approved by the IOC Sports Department, in recognition of the excellent co-operation between the two organisations over the past two years.
These proposals were finalised after the ISSF Technical Committee meeting in February, which featured representation from the ISSF Athletes Committee and other Discipline Committee Chairs. All changes were initially agreed upon by our Athletes and Technical Committees before sending to the IOC.
Showing faith in the future of our sport, the IOC has again awarded shooting sport with 340 quota spots, meaning the same number of athletes will compete as at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
These format changes will apply from 1 January 2026 in time for athletes to adapt during the LA28 qualification cycle.
Approved proposals include increasing the number of athletes in shotgun and the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event finals from six to eight. This brings them in line with all other individual final formats and increases representation of National Olympic Committees, providing consistency.
The 50m rifle 3 positions finals will feature just the standing position. Qualification still requires prone, kneeling and standing sections. This decision was made to greatly reduce event timings and alleviate the requirement for athlete transition times between positions in the final.
Sports presentation was also a factor in this change of format, which proved to be a challenge for commentators and the Olympic Broadcasting Services. This new format will be more media friendly and easier for new audiences to understand.
Changes have been made to the mixed team finals too, no longer creating gold and bronze-medal matches. Instead, all four teams who progress from qualification will compete together, following an elimination format instead.
All qualification rounds remain unchanged from Paris 2024. Final formats for individual 10m rifle and pistol events, as well the women’s 25m pistol, do not change.
These format changes do not require additional technology or space, nor have an influence on technical official resources. Trials of these new formats will be delivered throughout 2025 to ensure these new finals are refined for athletes and audiences before the change in 2026.
The events confirmed for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are men’s and women’s 10m air rifle, 50m rifle 3 positions, 10m air pistol, skeet and trap. Additionally, there is the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol and women’s 25m pistol, as well as mixed team competitions for 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol, and skeet.
